A good camp meal plan is less about clever recipes and more about sequencing. You want the most perishable food eaten first, you want ingredients that show up in more than one meal, and you want the last day to run on things that do not need ice at all. This three-day plan is written for four people arriving Friday afternoon and leaving Sunday after lunch, but it scales easily.
How the plan works
Cold first, dry last
Raw meat is cooked on the first and second nights while the cooler is coldest. Day three is built around eggs, tortillas, cheese and pantry goods that tolerate warmer ice.
Every item twice
Peppers and onions go into foil packets and breakfast hash. Tortillas cover breakfast burritos and lunch wraps. Fewer items means a smaller cooler and less waste.
Night one is intentionally simple. Arrival evenings are busy — tents, kids, firewood — so the first dinner is prepped at home and only needs reheating. That idea gets its own article in the journal: why the first-night dinner needs its own plan.
The menu, day by day
| Day | Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday | — (travel) | Packed sandwiches on the road | Make-ahead chili reheated in one pot, cornbread, shredded cheese |
| Saturday | Breakfast burritos: eggs, peppers, onion, cheese, salsa | Wraps with deli turkey, cheese, cucumber, apples | Sausage, potato and pepper foil packets; corn on the cob |
| Sunday | Pancakes from a pre-mixed dry jar, fruit, coffee | Quesadillas with leftover cheese and beans | — (home) |
Snacks run through all three days: trail mix, granola bars, apples, carrots and hummus, and the classic campfire dessert of your choice. Build one snack bag per person so the cooler lid stays closed between meals.

Cooler order
Pack in reverse order of use. Frozen chili and a block of ice go on the bottom; sausage and turkey go above that in sealed bags; eggs, cheese and vegetables sit near the top. On Saturday night, whatever is left should fit in the top third of the cooler. Our cooler packing guide walks through the layers and the temperature rules.
Before you leave home
Swaps & scaling
For vegetarians, replace sausage with thick-cut halloumi or a can of chickpeas in the foil packets, and use bean chili. For six people, multiply quantities by 1.5 and add one extra foil packet. For a two-night trip without a travel day, move Sunday lunch to Saturday and pack one less dinner. If fires are banned, everything on this plan cooks on a two-burner stove.
